A Comfortable Worship Style
Feels like home...
We worship together in what is best described as reformed Protestant worship. This includes a mix hymns on both the piano and organ and includes contemporary music. We have an active church choir that sings twice a month. A sermon is presented every Sunday. There are also several special worship experiences that are facilitated, such as Midweek Lenten worship, Holy Week worship and special prayer events. We also have Sunday school available for children on the first Sunday of every month, and visiting children are always welcome to participate! Open Communion is served on the last Sunday of every month.
Open Communion:
As a church gathered in the congregational tradition, we are a community centered on our covenant. In the act of communion we recognize both our individual relationship with God through Christ and also our corporate presence before God as His church. All of God's people are welcome to participate in our celebration of communion on the last Sunday of every month, plus World Communion Sunday in October. These services are followed by a time of fellowship. Communion is served while the congregation remains seated. We serve both wine and grape juice.
Preaching Rooted in Scripture:
Preaching at St. Jacobi is based on Old and New Testament Scripture of the New International Version of the Bible. The Sunday sermon is based on the scripture cycle provided in the Revised Common Lectionary. There are many wonderful resources that will give you more information about the lectionary and the sequence of scripture. Our Preaching cycle includes sermons based on many aspects of scripture and makes us of both historical and comtemporary interpretations.
Theology Made Accessible:
The preaching schedule is based on the Revised Common Lectionary and allows for a thorough preaching cycle and access to a variety of scriptures in worship. The Monthly Bible Study is a deeper look at the parables and stories of scripture that are used in worship. All visitors are welcome to participate in our bible studies to learn more about Biblical scriptures, to ask tough questions and to share with others a desire to grow in faith in Jesus Christ.
